Cricket World Cup - Some Interesting Stats

Congratulations to India - Winners of the 2011 Cricket World Cup

I know that cricket may not be everyone's cup of tea, but here are some interesting stats:
  • The nations that competed in the tournament comprise 26% of the world's population. That makes some sports competitions pale into insignificance, including anything involving baseball, basketball, american football and ice hockey whose biggest competitions each only involve about 5% of the world's population. Take that USA (and Canada).
  • The winning nation, India, represents over one sixth of the world's population.
  • This is the largest population to have become world champions in a major sport - ever. India doesn't just play cricket - it is an obsession in that country. It could be argued that no final in sporting history has made more people happy. How about that?
