University Fees Fiasco

When the Government allowed universities to charge up to £9000 for tuition fees, David Cameron envisaged that universities that did so would be 'the exception'. Now, according to today's Guardian, it appears that he was completely and utterly wrong.

Cameron - just plain wrong

Universities who wish to charge over £6000 - double last year's maximum - have to apply to OFFA, the Office For Fair Access. It now appears that the majority of institutions have applied, with most planning to charge over £7500, and a sizeable number planning to charge the full £9000. Far from being the exception, the high rate universities have become the rule.

Is it any wonder there is so much anger at large? This is a disastrous policy - and the outcome will once again focus anger upon the Lib Dems who had originally promised to vote against any rise in fees. They must have been praying that Cameron's assertion would prove to be correct. The Lib Dems have now overseen massive rises in nearly every students' fees - facilitated with their votes - and contrary to their signed pledges. The country will doubtless have a message for them in the May elections.
