Time for King William? Yes please!

The Guardian has reported the findings of a survey which shows that the british people would like to see Charles bypassed in favour of 'King William'. Nearly 60% want the young royal to ascend to the throne when the time comes, with one in three wishing that the Queen would abdicate to bring this about.

King Billy

I must confess that I love the idea. It's not because I don't like the idea of King Charles III (or George VII as some have suggested he would style himself). And it is certainly not because I think that William would do any better than his dough-brained father. The reason I would love to see the rules bent on this occasion, is that the rules are all that this tired institution still has left to keep it in place.

Let's face it. The royals are not there by merit. I know that some people think the current post-holder has done a fine job and she is really great at waving and whatever, but there should be a little more to maintaining this hopeless bunch than someone being a bit queen-like. Frankly, once they start tampering with the rules, they are as good as sunk. If they can contemplate ditching Charles because he is not to their current taste, what would it then take to get rid of William once people have grown tired of him? Without the glue of tradition and rules, there is little left to keep them in place.

So, I say 'bring it on'. Let the Queen abdicate now, pass over Charles, put William in place until we grow tired of him, and before long we will all be better off. Long live the Republic!
