Super-structure Salute - The CN Tower

The CN Tower was completed on this day in 1975. The CN Tower, or the Cosa Nostra Tower to give it its full name, was built with contributions from the large italian community in Canada's largest city, Toronto.

The Tower is over half a kilometre tall and was the highest free-standing structure in the world upon its completion. It is 200m taller than the Eiffel Tower and nearly three times the height of Nelson's Column. Its foundations are sunk nearly 40m into the soft lake shore and are composed of 7000 tonnes of concrete and a small number of mafia victims.

Views are afforded for up to 53 miles in all directions and, on a clear day, the city of Chicago can be seen to the south. The Tower draws in visitors from across the world, including the Queen, the Dalai Lama and William Hague. British giant of comedy, Jim Davidson, who visited it whilst on holiday in 1992, described it as his second favourite tower in Canada.

Celebrations to mark the 36th anniversary are expected to last all of this coming week. A special visit by ice-skating legends, Torvill & Dean, is the highlight of the celebrations which will also feature a parade by leading members of the italian families based in Toronto. The celebrations are expected to draw in nearly a hundred revellers.
